Dear Doctor, "You Congratulated us said she was Beautiful."
Dear Dr. Craft,
I am writing you this letter as a heartfelt thank you for the support you have given me since the birth of my daughter almost 4 years ago.
When our daughter Ellie was born and we received her diagnosis of Down syndrome, our world was rocked. The way the diagnosis was delivered was cold and clinical. It also included “I’m sorry”, as well as a huge list of potential health concerns she could face. We were even advised that we could adopt her out if we didn’t want her. We were sent on our way with a black and white printout about Down syndrome, and the phone number to the social security office. The future was unknown and we were so scared. We were unaware at the time about the incredible journey we were about to embark on.
You were already our son’s Pediatrician so I was nervous, I was unsure how familiar you were with Down syndrome. But at Ellie’s newborn appointment you congratulated us and told us our daughter was beautiful. You also reassured us that she was strong, healthy and had a bright future ahead of her.
As Ellie has grown and developed, you have cheered her along right with us. At every appointment Ellie makes sure to give you one of her famous hugs and you always oblige with a smile. As I have navigated new ways to manage her health care you have encouraged me, even though some of my ideas may have been in left field. You reassured me that what I was doing was right and that following my gut instinct was proving to be the right path every time.
You have told me time and time again what a great mother I am. I cannot tell you how much that means to me. As the mother of a child with Down syndrome, one of my biggest hurdles is feeling as if I’m not doing enough. So I thank you for being a positive light in our journey. I hope that other Doctors can learn from your insurmountable compassion and love for your patients. Thank you for helping us start out our journey with hope, and for continuing to provide such valuable guidance. And thank you for congratulating us on our beautiful daughter instead of saying you were sorry. Those words say it all, because we wouldn’t change her for the world.
