Dear Quinn's Mom,
Congratulations! Yes, it's a time for such celebration. You have just brought an incredible being into this world- on your lunch break!
Will there be hard times? So many. Will there be joyful ones? You can't even imagine the number. Will there be challenges? You bet. Let her lead the way- the strength, the happy, the grace and grit in which she faces the world is your example to follow.
Tonight, when she is taken a city away from you for more specialized care- know that this hard, terrible night is pouring a foundation for your strength.
The year ahead holds 62 days in the NICU, five surgeries, seven doctors, thousands of miles, and hundreds of appointments- and each one is strengthening you. The year ahead also holds little victories, giant milestones, tiny fingers squeezing your arm, and so many wide-eye gummy smiles- and each one is softening you.
Feel it all. Each thought, each feeling you have is justified. Immerse yourself in it, then get ready for the next hurdle- just as she is doing. In the darkness there will be light- she will show you. Open your eyes, your heart to the good.
Give yourself grace. Being her mom is blissfully yours. You are hers and she is yours. As a baby her light shines so brightly, imagine the wonder and opportunity the rest of her life holds.
Quinn Ruby is a warrior and you, Cassie, made her that way.
