What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome occurs when there is a full or partial additional copy of the 21st chromosome.  About one in every 800 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome.

Currently there are about 250,000 Americans with the condition.  Down syndrome occurs within all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.

A Down syndrome diagnosis can bring certain challenges, but advances in medical science, public attitudes and education have greatly improved the lives of those with the condition.
